Craigieburn Community Hospital, operated by Northern Health, serves Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north, where demand for health services has surged. Built under the Victoria Government’s $675M initiative to establish 10 community hospitals, it offers pharmacy, paediatric care, public dental services, day surgery, day chemotherapy, and rehabilitation. Masterflow was engaged by the government’s mechanical contractor to design, draw, and supply an optimal engineering solution for the project.

Our Process:
This specification dictated that maintenance and design responsibilities rest solely with the contractor. While some may shy away from this arrangement, the mechanical contractor was confident in our ability to deliver a reliable solution.
To meet the specifications of this project, our Engineers offered new generation Clivet SCREWLine machines. These have inverter-driven Screw compressor technology with high energy efficiency and great reliability. They operate with variable flow control providing the fixed Delta T at part load conditions and hence very good energy savings. In addition, the thermal inertia of the primary water circuits provides stability to the system and guarantees a stable setpoint for chilled and heated water.
The pumps were carefully selected to reflect the desired flow, head and efficiency according to the mechanical specification. Our engineers pride themselves on a thorough process that takes every detail into account. On this particular job, flow rate varied from 16.7 to 26.5 l/s between the 12 pumps, with their motors ranging from 3 to 11 kW.
The pumping equipment included 6 chilled water and 6 heating water Bakerflow back pullout pumps, delivered on inertia bases and all mounted with seismic springs. These were then lifted into the plantroom, ready for immediate connection, thus saving time. Alignments were performed on site to correct any movement which always occurs during transportation.

Multi Function Heat Pumps:
In addition, Masterflow supplied the 4 pipe Multifunction Heat Pumps. These provide 3 modes of operation cooling only, heating only, or simultaneous cooling and heating.
Since the hospital has a significant simultaneous cooling and heating load, these Multi-function heat pumps are well suited to this application, leading to considerable energy savings.
