Seawater Pumps & Solutions
Made from Duplex 2205 Stainless, the SWD range of BakerFlow are perfect for corrosive liquids such as sea water and river water. They're also suitable for a range of acid & alkaline liquids.
Duplex pumps are suitable for a range of liquids, but in the HVAC industry, they’re mostly utilised for harbour water heat exchange condenser water systems.
All Duplex Stainless Condenser Water centrifugal pumps follow the same nomenclature as the standard BakerFlow range.
All parts of the pump’s wet end are in materials suitable for seawater pumping. Hard-faced mechanical seals fitted over Duplex stainless sleeves ensure the shaft is protected from pitting over the life of the pump.
The casing, impeller and stuffing box backplate are all manufactured from cast Duplex Stainless 2205. Wear rings are fitted as standard BakerFlow models.
For seawater applications, 316 cast stainless steel (CF8M / AISI 316) provides as good resistance as ZFB, but isn’t as durable as Marine Bronze or Duplex 2205 Stainless material. On average, the overhaul of pumps is required every 4 years for seawater pumps made from 316 stainless.
The best material for seawater is Duplex 2205 stainless or Nickel Aluminium Bronze (BS1400 AB2). Because of the increasing availability, Duplex is becoming the material of choice in seawater condenser water applications. It’s also less harmful to the environment during the manufacturing process.
Due to the tidal conditional of seawater, there is a strong potential for temporary cavitation to occur. Add to this the accumulation over time of marine life on the inlet strainers and cavitation becomes more acute as the strainers become partially blocked.
Intake design is always a factor in centrifugal pump installation and especially in seawater applications. Careful review of the surrounding environment and activities can impact the suction conditions of pump installations.
Yes, in most cases the standard maintenance procedure for seawater pumps will include the routine removal and pressure washing of the inlet strainers. This is unavoidable due to the presence of marine life unless heavy duty motorised strainers are included as part of the installation.
