Set to open in 2024, Barangaroo Station is a $217 million piece of the Barangaroo Precinct Plan.
Built by BESIX Watpac and part of the NSW Government’s effort to refurbish Nawi Cove and Hickson Road, Barangaroo Station’s platforms plunge up to 30 metres below ground, situated just 2 minutes away from Martin Place Station.
BESIX Watpac is a multi-time winner of the prestigious Australian Institute of Building award. Their mechanical contractor engaged Masterflow to provide a prefabricated pump skid, along with expansion tanks and refill units, for this innovation of Sydney’s public transport network.

Our Process:
The primary challenge faced by our client on this site was the limited footprint of the station’s plantroom. They also specified that packaged prefabricated units be used in order to reduce site works.
Our client specifically requested prefabrication and our engineers are highly experienced in drafting custom-made solutions, we were able to design the pump skids from the ground up with the small plantroom in mind.
Because prefabricated pump skids are drafted with the end use and the individual client in mind, using a prefabricated solution to work within the confines of limited plantroom space can be advantageous.
2x 500L Aquaflex expansion vessels were fitted to a common skid with interconnecting pipework, making installation both quick and painless once the skid was delivered to site. RPZ refill units were pre-fitted to these tanks, protecting contamination between city mains and the HVAC system.
Outcomes:
Thanks to custom-engineered skid being designed specifically for this plantroom, Masterflow was able to successfully specify, source, construct and deliver our in-house solution in spite of limited space.
The client was able to connect our built-in pipework to their mains system, and now has two robust expansion vessels to maintain the pressure of their closed loop circuit, optimising efficiency and longevity.
